A day at Beech
How a school day unfolds
The morning belongs to the work cycle. Afternoons are quieter and shorter.
- 018:30 a.m.
Step 1: Arrival
A guide meets each child at the door. Children hang their coats, change into indoor shoes and find the work they want to start with.
- 02Morning
Step 2: The work cycle
A long, uninterrupted stretch in which children choose their work, return it to the shelf and choose again. Guides give short lessons to one child or a few.
- 03Mid-morning
Step 3: Snack
Snack is open for part of the morning. Children set the table, prepare it with a guide, eat with friends and clean up.
- 04Late morning
Step 4: Outdoor time
The yard has a garden bed, a sandpit and room to run. Children go out in light rain and snow with the right clothes.
- 0512:30 p.m.
Step 5: Lunch
Lunch comes from home. Children carry it to the table, eat together and wash their dishes.
- 06Until 3:30 p.m.
Step 6: Afternoon
Toddlers rest. Older children return to quieter work, a story and a last circle before pickup.
The room
A room built at a child's height
Tables, chairs, shelves, sinks and coat hooks are all child-size, so a child can do for themselves what an adult would otherwise do for them. Nothing is out of reach, and nothing is there for decoration.
